IIT JEE foundation: when should your child start?
The honest answer to "when should we start JEE foundation?" is: earlier than coaching ads imply for fundamentals, later than they imply for intensive prep. The two are not the same thing.
Class 8 — build the thinker
This is about reasoning, not JEE syllabus. Strong algebra, curiosity, and problem-solving habits. No pressure, no past papers — just a solid, enjoyable foundation that makes everything later easier.
Class 9–10 — bridge to the syllabus
Now school and JEE foundation can run together. The aim is a rock-solid PCM base aligned with NCERT, with a gentle introduction to the style of JEE problems. Olympiad exposure here pays off twice over.
Class 11–12 — intensive prep
This is the real JEE grind, and it goes far better for students who arrive with strong fundamentals already in place. Students who skipped the foundation years spend Class 11 patching gaps instead of pushing ahead.
The honest trade-off
- Too early and intensive: burnout risk, diminishing returns.
- Too late: perpetual catch-up, more stress in Class 11–12.
- The sweet spot: foundations from Class 8–9, intensity from Class 11.
